If you are using the standard desktop iso and installing in virtual box you will have to run the commands sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms. After this it will become usable. There are prebuilt virtual box images availible from many sites, but no 'offical image' so to say. Oracle VM VirtualBox Base Packages - 6.1.26. VirtualBox is free and enterprise-ready virtual machine platform that allows you to run other operating systems within Windows. Using VirtualBox you are able to install other operating systems into a virtual computer that can be launched and used directly within Windows. This allows you to run virtually any operating system at the same time while using Windows.
When using VirtualBox, the software is installed on the host machine and then any other virtual machines are considered guests of that host. These guest virtual machines can be running a variety of different operating systems that include older versions of Windows, linux, and even MacOS with some tweaking. Using a program like VirtualBox allows you to perform a variety of tasks from a single computer such as testing operating systems before you install them, run software that only works on older versions of Windows, analyze malware without risk of your normal machine becoming infected, and to develop software for other operating systems. Oracle VM VirtualBox is an industrial-strength open source virtualisation tool that makes it easy to create virtual machines (VMs), simulated computers that run on your PC but act as though they were separate systems. It's a powerful capability that has many different applications.
If you'd like a closer look at Windows 10 before you upgrade, for instance, then you could install Microsoft's latest in a VM, then access it in a window on your XP or Vista desktop.
Or maybe you've upgraded to Windows 10 and find a favourite old app doesn't work any more? Create a Windows XP VM and you might be able to run it again.
VirtualBox can also be a useful security tool: if you download and test apps in a VM, then any malware you might encounter will be isolated from your main system.

VirtualBox 6 included an interface redesign, making it easier to view and manage your virtual machines.
